Careers Adviser

This post is based in the Careers and Employability team which is within Student Services. Careers and Employability contributes towards the University’s mission for its students to acquire high level employability skills by providing a range of services and activities including group sessions and workshops, information, advice and guidance, the promotion of full and part time vacancies, careers conferences and events, careers inventories, the Worcester Award, and the Destination of Leavers of Higher Education survey. The team is based next to firstpoint on the St Johns campus but Careers Advisers are expected to travel to different University locations to deliver a service.

The post-holder will be responsible for providing careers information, advice and guidance and employability support to students through group work, talks and face-to-face or online interventions. They will develop and deliver activities, materials and other resources to enhance the employability of University of Worcester students and recent graduates. The post holder will act as the key link with named academic Institutes and will use their knowledge of local and national labour market information and UW graduate destinations to provide employability support for students as appropriate.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To provide careers information, advice and guidance to University of Worcester students and recent University of Worcester graduates, through face-to-face, telephone, email, or online media.

2. To develop and deliver resources, events and other activities to enhance the employability of University of Worcester students and graduates.

3. To initiate, plan, and deliver careers and employability group sessions both within the curriculum and lunchtime sessions.

4. To work proactively with academic and other colleagues across the university to provide resources and develop activities to help them support the employability of their students, through the curriculum and related events.

5. To contribute to the organisation of, and at times take the lead in the delivery of events and activities related to employability and career choice. These could include careers conferences, fairs, workshops, and Worcester Award activities.

6. To develop targeted approaches to support the employability of specific groups of students in agreement with the Careers and Employability Service Manager

7. To contribute to the Destinations of Leavers of Higher Education survey conducted and compiled annually by the Careers and Employability team. This could include data collection support, the coding of jobs, data analysis and the production and dissemination of reports.

8. To contribute to the maintenance and development of appropriate links with local and national employers, training organisations, professional bodies and other education institutions as appropriate.

9. To become a member of AGCAS and contribute towards the wider HE Careers and Employability community through discussion groups and training events.

10. To maintain an up to date knowledge and relevant professional practice in the field of higher education careers guidance and employability. To actively seek our further development opportunities and to update colleagues as appropriate.

11. To represent Careers and Employability on appropriate internal and external committees, groups and bodies as required.

12. To assist the Careers and Employability Service Manager in producing reports, policies, procedures, discussion documents and other papers as required, where necessary presenting or helping to present them to internal and/or external meetings.

13. Take part in and support the development of quality assurance and enhancement activities and procedures within the Careers and Employability team and wider Student Services department.

14. Any other tasks which may reasonably be requested by the Careers and Employability Service Manager, Head of Student Services or other members of senior University staff.

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.

Essential Criteria

1. Degree or equivalent.

2. Qualification in educational and/or careers guidance (e.g. DipCG, QCG, NVQ4, AGCAS diploma etc.).

3. Recent experience in providing careers information, advice and guidance, preferably in a Higher Education setting.

4. Experience in group work or teaching of careers and employability to large groups.

5. Experience in the delivery of resources and activities to support the employability of higher education students.

6. Proven ability to use initiative and take a proactive approach to solving problems.

7. Capability to work as part of a team, with willingness to assist other team members in times of pressure and undertake other duties as required.

8. High quality interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with a wide range of groups such as students, academic staff, employers and other professionals.

9. Excellent communication skills and presentation skills (oral and written), including the ability to write engagingly using a variety of media.

10. Competent in IT, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Word, Powerpoint and Excel, and social media platforms.

 

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience of work with academic and other staff to deliver employability skills in the curriculum

2. A post 16 teaching qualification.

3. Experience of producing digital resources and updating web pages.
